Sonic Performance: Week 2 - Research

So, this week I’ve continued developing my research and gathering inspiration for my performance piece.

As I’ve started getting to grips with Ableton Live, I’ve been experimenting with layering different effects and collecting sounds that begin to shape the sonic world I want to create. It still feels very early-stage, but I’m starting to get a sense of direction.

At the beginning of the week, I was able to hire out the Ableton Push 3 from my university, which has been really exciting. I’ve spent time exploring what it can do and how it connects with Ableton Live, although there’s definitely a lot to learn.

After spending some time experimenting, I’ve realised just how much there is to get my head around. Because I’m working within a short timeline, alongside my game project and other work I’ll be sharing soon, I’ve decided not to pursue the MIDI body tracking idea for this performance.

While I was really inspired by this concept, I want to make sure I focus on doing one thing well rather than overcomplicating the project. This means I can put more time into refining my performance using the Push 3 and developing a stronger overall outcome.

To help organise my ideas, I created a mind map to explore different directions and refine my concept further.

I’ve also started experimenting with building different set templates within Ableton Live 12. This is helping me begin structuring my performance and getting a feel for how I want my sound to evolve.

From here, my focus will be on continuing to create, experiment, and refine each week, gradually shaping the performance and sharing my progress along the way.

I’ve also begun experimenting with the Push, playing around with some early ideas and starting to explore how I want the performance to take shape.
